Future job comparison

Data From Salary.com

Y axis is amount of money in dollars
X axis is the percentile, only plot 3 points, 25th, 75th and 90th.
A line with the lowest starting point in each color means Instructor of [Insert Major].
2nd lowest is Assistant professor of [Insert Major].
3rd lowest is Associate professor of [Insert Major].
then it's Professor of [Insert Major].
Last one is Dean of [Insert Major].

From what I can see, clearly, the safe major to chose is computer science. Pay is good even for a CS instructor(around the same pay as a associate professor in philosophy, damn!

Philosophy is the most unsafe. Unless one can become a professor and manage to get into the very top, it's better to select the other 2.

Math is good. Money increase is steady compare to title.
Math professors can earn more than dean of mathematics.

Dean of medicine totally owns everyone else in colleges. The 25th percentile is already outside this graph.(almost 300K)

Is MAA ...fail?

in

MAA, Mathematical Association of America has a very strange price system.
Let's take a look on how to get the journals(if you are a undergraduate) from MAA pay the least price(if you can get enough people to help you.)
The kind of memberships:

Seriously. WTF.
Get a
student membership + math horizon = 30
student membership + College mathematics journal = 30
but student membership + College mathematics journal + math horizon = 67.

So MAA might have people who are good at math but seriously doesn't get marketing, or they just want people who suck at math pay more price.

Only $80 is required to get all four journals, while if you select that choice, it is $161

Live blog: spider and insect struggles for life

So, a somewhat large insect flied into my room, and got caught on the spider web.

Currently the spider and the insect are in a on going struggle. The insect is large, and tries to get away from the web, but seems to be more tangled each second. The spider, quite small in comparison, tries to approach the insect, but get hit back.

Now the insect seems to run out of strength.

I should get an RSS feed that automatically updates on the status.

Now the spider is really close to the insect.

Touched it!.

Got fend back again.

The spider backs off to it's original position, the place it was before the insect appeared.
Guess the spider can't sense anymore movement so it thought the insect has escaped.

Now the insect is moving again, the spider moved toward the insect... again...

OMG when is this loop going to end... maybe when the insect generates enough heat that it can't generate anymore.

That taught a lesson to the insect, so the entire hive minded insect species will never come to my room again.

But now I sense a spider problem, I saw spiders that are 1 cm in width and that's quite scary. I shall poison some insects, release them in my room, let them get caught by the spiders, where spiders will feed on them and die from poisoning.

Fate, how Fey, which is also "irony" if you are chemistry major, I guess that's where the word irony come from. English is truly a strange language.

Sleep, insect's life will be over by tomorrow.

I finally get SAT now.
The test maker find a list of words abused by Harvard law school students and put them on tests. So they PROFIT from official study guides because no other company is rich enough to hire professionals to come up with a comprehensive list of useless words in English.

UPDATE: It is dead.

Island Labs

Island Labs is a small non-profit organization (OMG white people loves non-profit!)
There are many different kind of people focus on (mechanical, electrical, chemical) engineering.

First conference is Wednesday, July 30th, at Farmingdale State University. And there will be a talk about a homebrew multitouch system.

No free food yet.

When will there be a Island math conference...

Amazon 4-for-3 deals

Amazon 4-for-3 deal:
Buy 4 item and have the one with the least price free. 4-for-3 items are under $10.
I believe if I buy 4n books, then it will be made into a 4n-for-3n deal that's not in writing, where n items with the least price is free. I did not test it yet, hope someone try that for me. Maxium saving is 25%, not bad.

How to maximize the amount of saving, suppose there is no such thing as shipping fee(If you are in your Amazon prime trial period).

1. Assume one have to buy n items.
2. If n is divisible by 4, the best strategy is to sort the items by price, forms a series of prices a_i, where a_i\le a_{i+1}. This also forms set B.(uhh.. this set allows repetition of elements...)
3. Buy a vector of them each time <a_{4i+1}, a_{4i+2}, a_{4i+3}, a_{4i+4}> for 0\le i\le \frac{n}{4}-1, which will maximize saving.
Proof: The total amount of money paid for this method is
\sum _{i=1}^{n} a_i - \sum _{i=0}^{\frac{n}{4}-1} a_{4i+1}
Make each of the number removed into a set, S
Each time find one element for S, the 4 element of B is removed.
A non-rigorous proof
Create n blocks out of 4n elements in B, name it b_1,b_2,b_3.....b_n
S is set containing the minimal for each b_n.
we can see a_1 has to be part of S, and b_1.
suppose a_2 is not in b_1, but in b_k,
and a_i is the smallest number in b_1 other than a_i.
If one switch a_2 with a_i, we can find all the smallest number in b_k is larger than a_2. All the rest blocks doesn't change at all.
Which shows that a_2 must be in the same block with a_1 to allow the sum of S be maximized.
use the same reasoning for a_3 and a_4.
and use the same reasoning for all blocks.
we get the original way have to be the best way.
If the count of elements in B is not divisible by 4, the best way is still the same, group items of 4 from most expensive to least expensive, remain a few least expensive ones in one group, buy each group separately.

This can be extended to any n-for-n-1 deals and should be able to extend to any n-for-k deals, where k lesser than n.
